Review: Nike Training Club App for iPhone

September 8, 2011

Update: Do you need workout music to set to your training? Check out my workout playlist  for my music recommendations!

I’ve used Nike as part of my workouts for some time. Nike was one of the first outlets that came to my hometown which meant I used Nike shoes for a long, long time and it’s still one of the first brands I look at. I also run quite a bit with their Nike+ sensor in my shoes and tracking my runs.

When I heard about the Nike Training Club App for the iPhone, I was interested but wasn’t expecting much. Since I don’t have an iPhone, I downloaded it to my iPad. 500MBs seemed like a big app, and now I know why.

It’s pretty awesome, y’all.

I’ve been reading The New Rules of Lifting for Women (review to follow in the future) and the Nike Training Club app was actually perfectly timed to go with my increased interest in strength training vs. running.

So what’s in it? The app has 30-minute workouts, for all skill levels, and has broken them down into high intensity intervals for you with not only really clear photos and instructions how to do various moves, but also video of those moves being done. This was exciting for me as I want to get a quick reference sometimes when I’m in the gym about form or posture on a particular lift.

Pick a routine, set it to music that you choose, and then the audio prompts will tell you when to switch from one to another.

Not only is this perfect for the gym, but if you want to do workouts at home, most of the moves can be done with just your body weight. I could have really used this when I was traveling this summer, but I’m going to try and work it into my routine once a week, and it will definitely be a go-to workout on my next trip (coming up!)  I used this on my trip to Kenya and it was a great workout in my hotel room. Thumbs up!

And it’s free. Also, kudos to Nike – all of the content looked great on the iPad, too, even at 2x / re-sized.

I love my NTC app on my iPhone!! However, I wish I could customize my own workout by selecting different exercises from different workouts.
